The series consists mostly of black and white prints (and a few color prints and color transparencies) relating to aeronautical research and testing at the Ames Aeronautical Laboratory and the Flight Research Center (Edwards Air Force Base) in California, Langley Aeronautical Laboratory in Virginia, and Lewis Flight Propulsion Laboratory in Ohio. Photographs Relating to Aeronautical Research Facilities, 1928 - 1963 (255-RFA) Some prints include public release documents created for media outlets by NASA about various storms, depressions, and hurricanes. In addition to the cloud studies, this satellite also collected global heat balance data used when studying changes in the earth's temperature. A number of hurricanes, typhoons, and tropical storms of varying intensity appear in this series such as Hurricane Gretchen in the Pacific Ocean and Hurricane Celia in the Atlantic Ocean. The photographs depict aerial images of cloud cover that were used for weather forecasting around the world. This series consists of prints and negatives related to the orbit of the Integrated Test and Operations System One (ITOS-1) weather satellite.
